This is a Wordpress tutorial on how to properly change your WordPress username.


Step 1:

Go to your Wordpress Dashboard, click on “Users”.

It will display all your current users. You need to create a new user to get the username that you want. Do that by clicking “Add New”.

Step 3:

Fill up the form and enter your desired username. The Role of the new user should be the same as the old user. In this case, I chose “Administrator”. 

NOTE: You cannot use the same email for two existing users, so you need to use a different email address for the mean time. You can edit the email address of the users later.

Save it by clicking “Add New User”.

Step 4:

Since all your content is in a different user, you need to transfer it to the new one. To do that, go to the user where all your content is, then click “delete”. You do not need this user anymore since you created a new one with your desired name.

Step 5:

Be careful not to select “Delete all contents”. Choose the second option which is “Attribute all content”, click the drop down menu, then select the new user you created then click “Confirm Deletion”. This will transfer all your contents from the old user to the new one.

Step 6:

After transferring all contents to your new user, you can now change your email.

To do that, click “edit” below your new user icon.

Scroll down to the part where the email is located, then enter your desired email address. You can now use the email address from the deleted user account.

You can also use the User Role Editor plug-in to change your Username, but using the Wordpress Dashboard is easier. I can list out instructions for the User Role Editor plug-in in the comment section to help you further.


Another way to change your username is if you have access to your Hosting. You can go to “phpMyAdmin” and go to “wp_users”. It will list out all your existing users. Just click and edit your user, then hit save. I cannot show you in detail as it displays sensitive information.
